G's v Dorking

G's v Dorking

Matt Marriott26 Mar - 13:43

7 - 71

On Sunday, top of the table Dorking made their way to East Grinstead. The team knew this was going to be a tough game, and it was the toughest result of the season. However, determination and grit was shown by the women of EG throughout.

The game started well with some great turnovers by Marshy and Hobbit. Great runs had by Comfort and Ruby. But the fast legs of Dorking saw them get their first try within 8 minutes. And unfortunately it would not be the last. The first half saw a total of 7 tries from Dorking. EG just could not get their hands on their fast runners to stop them, despite some gallant efforts by Ruby, Comfort, Leah and Millie. Marshy made some great carries, along with Leah and Angie, but they could not get past a strong, defensive Dorking line. The first half ended without any points on the scoreboard for the Gs.

The second half started with some great pressure from EG. Dorking's strong scrums were posing a problem, but the forward pack found some strength in the second half and managed to hold the scrums nicely for more managed play. And the pressure form EG meant Dorking started to make some handling errors. Could the G's capitalise on this?

After another try by Dorking, EG came storming down the pitch with a great run by Marshy, passed off to Hobbit and back again to gain ground. Right in the corner, the forward pack drew the defense in with crash balls, until quick hands out to space saw the ball safely caught by Jorja, who ran it in under the posts for her first Senior try. The home crowd cheered as the try was converted by Hobbit. The lift that EG needed meant heads were held a bit higher, and the pressure continued. EG made some great attacking efforts throughout the second half, and it was clear they were determined to get more points on the board. Many of the team played varying positions in the game, with Marshy going from the backs to the forwards, Hobbit getting lifted in the lineout, and Sian, back after injury, playing hooker for the first time in her playing career. Despite their efforts, no more points were scored by EG and the score did not reflect the hard work put in by all.

The team must be commended for their fighting spirit. Dorking are at the top of the table for a reason, but it was great to see EG keep their heads. The last home game of the season was the not result the team wanted, but their attentions must now turn to their final league game of the season in Guernsey. Then the team will take to the pitch for the final time this season for The Sussex Cup final on Saturday 10th May. And this will see EG face Seaford for the 3rd time this season. Whilst they lost both games in the league, last season saw a triumphant victory for the G's on Seaford's home turf. Can they do it again? Keep an eye out for the details and make sure you're there to support the team.
