This Sunday EGRFC Women were away to face local rivals, Crawley RFC Women. Crawley always offer a fantastic opposition and are ever seeking that elusive win. Gs delivered an outstanding performance; combining skill, teamwork, and determination to secure a dominant victory and second place in the league.
Crawley took to the field with 14 players, an all too common story in the women's game - but playing without subs didn't phase them! Gs dropped to match numbers and Crawley kicked off.
The match began with East Grinstead asserting their dominance early. The forwards set the tone with powerful carries and hard hits, winning the collisions and gaining valuable ground. The backs were quick to capitalize, with sharp hands from the 12 Ash and 13 Ruby duo creating space for the wingers to exploit. Ruby opened the scoring with a fantastic run, breaking through Crawley’s defensive line to dive over for her first try of the day. Soon after, Steph followed suit with a stunning solo effort, racing down the wing to score her first try, much to the delight of the crowd.
Defensively, East Grinstead held firm, with big tackles from the forwards and quick cover from the backs ensuring Crawley struggled to gain any momentum. Naomi’s impressive tackling and Leah’s clearing kicks kept EG in control, as they finished the first half on top.
The second half saw the Gs step up another gear, showcasing their attacking prowess. Captain Naomi was unstoppable, darting through Crawley’s defense to score a hat trick of tries, demonstrating both power and agility. Ruby added another to her tally, storming over the line for her second try of the match. Steph continued her impressive form, using her face-melting pace and tenacity to secure her second try of the game. The team’s forwards laid a strong foundation with exceptional ball carrying and relentless pressure at the breakdown, while Leanne stood out with her unstoppable charges off the kickoffs. Sian was flawless from the tee, slotting four conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking and giving EG a commanding lead.
Vicky T and Georgia brought incredible energy off the bench, with Vicky delivering pinpoint passes to set up attacking plays and Georgia making a huge impact in defense and at the breakdown. Leah’s try-saving one-on-one tackle was a defensive highlight, shutting down a rare Crawley breakaway and maintaining EG’s momentum.
East Grinstead Women showcased a complete team performance, with tries from Ruby (2), Steph (2), and Hobbit (3), and a perfect kicking display from Sian (4 conversions). The effort and skill displayed by every player highlighted why EG is such a formidable side. Congratulations to the entire team for an exceptional game!
This match was not only sweet for the win, but a hugely significant for the team personally, as we were honoured to welcome two debut players transferring in from the under 18's EG Girls Jorje and Gabi.
