G's had a few weeks off and were ready to go against Seaford who are currently at the top of the table.
Kick of from G's and some quick turnovers from Ash allowed G's to make some vital ground. Continuous changes in possession throughout the first 15 minutes kept play in the centre of the pitch. A wonderful charge down by Leah saw possession remain with G's following a lovely box kick from Hobbit. Unfortunately Seaford got the ball out to their winger who ran down and managed to score a converted try. The forwards held their own against the Seaford scrum meaning little ground was lost. There was some beautiful set play off a scrum between the forwards and backs, this gave Lucy a lovely running opportunity which was shut down by Seaford defence. Quick turnover and fast offloads allowed another converted Seaford try.
Constant changes in possession and discipline issues from both sides led to Seaford touching down for a third try which was not converted. G's did extremely well and held off Seaford’s maul and regained possession. Following some discipline issues there was a yellow card given to Seaford just before half time.
With Seaford leading 19-0 going into the second half, G's had a strong team talk and refocused their efforts on keeping that ball alive and safe. Following determined G's defence there was a couple of injuries in which the team was shuffled about. A whole team effort was seen to get the ball from halfway up to the 22 which then saw the forwards work tirelessly through the middle of the pitch, with phase after phase until Angie touched the ball down between the posts enabling Sian to convert with ease.
With both teams back to 15 players there was a battle against the elements and pitch conditions, both teams held defence well and very few breaks were made. Following a high tackle another yellow card was given to Seaford. With the opposition down to 14 players, G's took their opportunity and got the ball out wide to winger Imogen who ran just over half the pitch stepping and handing off players to score another G's try. This conversion was narrowly missed but brought the score to 19-12.
Fresh legs for Seaford were seen to bring a large amount of energy onto the pitch and Seaford battled through G's defence to see another 2 converted try's on the board. With a few minutes left on the clock G's battled endlessly to keep the opposition at bay. With strong carries and multiple push backs on the 5 meter line, Seaford saw another opportunity and got the final try, the final score at 38-12.
Despite the weather and pitch conditions, the women played a fierce, passionate and determined game, constantly fighting back against an excellent Seaford attack and regaining possession throughout. A couple of big mentions, one of which goes to our forward of the match Angie, who not only scored a try but also showed up with the fire and passion in her belly. Playing the full 80 minutes with great tackles, line breaks and offloads she was well deserving of forward of the match!
Our back of the match was Lucy who has only played 2 games of rugby and shows the natural ability she has for the game. Making some wonderful tackles, handoffs and big carries down the wing. We are very excited to see Lucy continue to grow as a player. Our player of the match went to our fabulous Ash! Ash continuously put her body on the line, with some massive tackles, huge carries and multiple turnovers she was a constant on the pitch. A very well deserved player of the match!
