Biography

Peter Morley
Age: 34

Why do you play rugby?

I first played rugby at the age of 8 and it was my school friend who got me into it, his dad still played and coached so we grew up playing in the minis at Bromley RFC.

Rugby was also sport of choice at my secondary school, Dulwich College. I joined in 1997 the year after the infamous "invincibles" left (a team that didn't lose a game for 7 entire seasons of rugby from age 11-18!). Nick Easter had just left but Andrew Sheridan and David Flatman were still in the 6th form when I joined; I felt tiny compared to them!

I was in the 3rd XV in the final year of school in 2003 and it was tremendously good fun, we were the joint best third team on record, and narrowly lost our final game to a strong Tonbridge side.

We did beat Eton though which was incredibly satisfying, (but not difficult), I even threw a random punch in a maul because I thought I had a statistically higher chance of hitting a future prime minister; although that's yet to come true.

I've played now at EGRFC for nearly 10 years for nothing but enjoyment. There are very few things in life as enjoyable as being part of a team that not only works well but which utilises all it's members to the very best of their abilities.

Life outside East Grinstead RFC

I'm an insurance broker for Gallagher's who are now in their second year as premiership rugby sponsors.

Other than that, I'm either looking after my house or garden, or enjoying a bit of photography.

Who’s your favourite player and why?

More recently I'd say it's got to be Maro Itoje he's a truly exceptional athlete. I remember the impact he had on his debut against Italy in 2016, then he won MOTM on his third cap against Wales by stealing all their lineouts!

What’s your favourite rugby moment?

It was France vs New Zealand at Twickenham in the semi-final of the 1999 World Cup, I was there watching it.

Everyone was expecting Jonah Lomu along with a very strong Kiwi side to demolish the French as they had done to the English a few weeks before but the French actually turned up and played the biggest game of their lives. Shame they didn't turn up in the final though!

What’s your advice to younger East Grinstead RFC players coming through?

Commit to training, you won't get better or understand how your team mates play if you don't train alongside them.

And take time to concentrate on little details in your game, for example when presenting the ball in a ruck do so in a way which will optimise the speed and quality of the pass that the scrum half can make. That attention to detail when you're on the floor could allow a try to be scored by the time you've even gotten up after having a little rest on the floor...

What is the Best Thing About East Grinstead RFC?

It's a lovely club, with great facilities, but it would be nothing without the dedicated people and staff who help keep it functioning and look out for others. Seeing their hard work makes me want to be a better person.
