In a new initiative, the match reports are now being written by the match DotD! This week, the dubious honour falls to Luke Maker who was playing at Outside Centre and seemed to be wearing slippers!!!
East Grinstead RFC secured a solid 18-5 victory over Old Haileyburians in an entertaining match at home. Both sides started the game eager to finish with a win, pure aggression shown from the G’s meant multiple penalties won and a whole 70m gained.
The boys so nearly scored but a great recovering tackle from the opposition winger stopped the opportunity. Unable to convert the visit to the Haileyburians 22, East Grinstead stood strong on their own 5 meter line for an age before Old Haileyburians took an early lead with a try, great hands from the backs to open the scoring.
East Grinstead soon responded with a penalty kick from number 15 Oli Billin, putting them straight back into the game.
In the 2nd half, East Grinstead took the lead through number 8 Connor Leggat, who scored from a great driving run, taking 3 Haileyburian players over the try line with him. This was shortly followed by another try, this time from winger Will Roberts, after Oli Billin drew 3 players to give Will the space to elegantly dive over the try line, which extended their lead to 12-5.
Towards the end of the second half, East Grinstead continued to apply pressure and added two more penalty kicks, sealing their victory despite a late effort from Old Haileyburians. The win boosts East Grinstead’s standing and highlights their strong form as they move forward in the season.
Thank you Luke! Can I add that the whole pack were fantastic at scrum time and gave the supporters huge joy as they marched OH down the pitch time and again. When the oppo ask to go uncontested in the second half, you know you are doing something right!
