I started playing rugby aged 11 at senior school in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire and progressed to playing for the colts and senior sides (1st & 2nd teams) at the local club. I played for Huntingdon until my early 30’s when I moved to Surrey with work and decided to take up Triathlons with East Grinstead Tri Club as a new challenge.

My daughter Kate wanted to try out Rugby, so we came down to the club and she had a great time with the under 8’s, helped by a few of her classmates being in the group. I was reminded of how I first started playing and the way that rugby can find a place for everyone who wants to get involved. The next week my youngest daughter Alice decided she wanted to join in with the under 6’s and I spoke to Steve Floodgate about getting involved with coaching Alice’s group and my Sunday mornings are now fully booked!

Steve mentioned coming down for the social touch rugby on a Tuesday night. I was a little nervous as I hadn’t played for nearly 20 years and didn’t want to make a fool of myself. Despite the torrential rain and a few creaky joints I had a great time; everyone was very friendly and the group was made up of players with a broad span of abilities so I didn’t feel out of place. After the session I knew that I’d had a good work out (much more fun than at the gym) and had earned my pint of Guinness!
