G-Force 53 vs 15 Sevenoaks
Saturday 08 Oct 2011
London 2 SE
East Grinstead welcomed near Kent neighbours Sevenoaks to Saint Hill on Saturday looking to maintain their 100 % start to the season and maintain top spot in the league.
On a bright but breezy day there was a large crowd swelled by the many visiting supporters and the ground looked in its usual immaculate condition smartly aided by the introduction of many new pitch level sponsors advertising logo’s.
From the kick off G’s looked in determined and focused mood with eager chasing and sharp tackling and after only three minutes the early pressure told on the visitors when McKenna slotted an easy penalty for not releasing.
G’s continued to force the pace and it was clear that their relatively slow starts in previous games was not going to be repeated as the ambitious cross field handling soon got all backs confidently involved in early play.
It was no surprise that after seven minutes the excellent centre Downey, finished in the far left corner after neat interchange between the back three coming into the attacking line.
Sevenoaks tried to hold G’s but by now the home team pace and accuracy continually threatened and after sixteen minutes flanker Sam Levett gleefully went under the posts after neat inter handling between the pack, with McKenna converting, score 15 – 0.
The fast moving, entertaining and open game was aided by an excellent advantage playing referee, together with both teams playing with discipline and respect, and in a great spirit.
Sevenoaks finally slotted a long range penalty and then soon after their left winger superbly finished in the corner after a long and hopeful kick and chase.
However keen to maintain their advantage G’s stormed back before half time when young winger Alex Dunn jinked through the wide right channel and then Nr 8, Michael Tredgett, thundered over the line after a quick tap free kick fifteen metres out, McKenna again accurate with the conversion to make the half time score 29 – 8.
The start of the second half saw arguably the best move and try of the match when Sevenoaks brilliantly worked the ball from right wing to the far left and score in the corner, still clinging on to within catching distance of the home team at 29 – 15.
However G’s then significantly upped the tempo and controlled aggression to score three tries in a sustained twenty minute spell, with Downey again ghosting through the centre channel, then the quicksilver McKenna darting through, followed by a wonderful solo mazy run from James Crittell.
New boy Kelvin 'THE MONK' Weir completed the scoring with a powerful run through the centre channel to make the final score an impressive and deserved 53 – 15.
Seven different try scorers shows the measure of the expansive teamwork that G’s have developed this season and with five wins in succession they remain clear top by five points.
This week there are no fixtures, but G’s return to action on 22 October with an away fixture at near neighbours Warlingham, who themselves lie second in the table.
